Music Review: Neil Young - Chrome Dreams II

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

I love how Neil Young can write a beautiful & senstive ballad thingie and place it up against a song that features tortured guitar amps.

Check out Chrome Dreams II and listen to the world’s shortest 18-minute song.

Music Review: Jacky Terrasson - Mirror

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

This has been in my pile for a few months, but I’ve been listening to the music all the while. Terrasson’s terrific musical ideas are on full display with this program of solo piano standards and originals.

But…the question I’ve posed in this review is: Why do people think jazz is too ‘complicated’?

Music Review: Rafi Malkiel - My Island

Friday, October 26th, 2007

The music of Cuba by way of Israel?

How about by way of Polish wedding receptions?

Seriously, Rafi Malkiel is a great bandleader, trombonist, and musical mind. This record proves it.

The Friday Morning Listen: Elvis Presley - ELV1S 30 #1 Hits

Friday, October 26th, 2007

It’s been a weird and sad week at chez Saleski, as we lost a remote, yet dear, family member.

Then…this weird thing happened on the way to work.

Music Review: Howard Wiley - The Angola Project

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Given all of the amazing music that Alan Lomax discovered in his travels, I would be willing to bet that the number of related recordings numbers in the thousands if not tens of thousands.

Here is a collection of jazz compositions inspired by the songs of Louisiana’s Angola Penitentiary.

Oh, and remember the name Howard Wiley.

The Friday Morning Listen: Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Somebody turned me on to these cool videos taken at the Springsteen show in Ottowa. Nearing the end of the show, Bruce brought out Win and RĂ©gine from Arcade Fire to do first “State Trooper” and then “Keep The Car Running”.

The tune selection wasn’t as important as the crowd reaction. I mean, the woman near the camera absolute freaked out. Her response was, to me, a perfect example of what passion for music is all about.

Music Review: R.E.M. - Live

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

When you were a kid, did you ever want something really, really bad? And then, when it finally showed up, you ended up being disappointed?

Well, OK…this record isn’t quite like that. In fact, it’s much better than expected, especially considering that it came from the Around The Sun Tour.

By the way, isn’t that one of the worst album covers of all time?

Music Review: Jarrett,Peacock,DeJohnette - My Foolish Heart

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

This trio, rightly called TheTrio, has put out yet another live recording.

It’s interesting to me how they make even the most well-worn material seem fresh. Does the world need another version of “On Green Dolphin Street”? Apparently, we do.

Music Review: H.I.M. - Venus Doom

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

I’m not gonna say what exact genre of rock music this is because every time I get it “wrong”, the finicky rock gurus get one of their forehead veins throbbing. Relax, people!!

Anyway, check out Venus Doom. It’s goth-pop, or goth-metal, or metal, or poppy hard rock or gees…whatever!!

The Friday Morning Listen: Angelo BadalamentiTwin Peaks (TV Soundtrack)

Friday, October 12th, 2007

It’s one of my favorite television series ever.

But that’s not the point this morning. No, what we really care about is why do we like what we like? Do we even know?
