The Friday Morning Listen: Elvis Costello - This Year’s Model

Friday, November 30th, 2007

After investigating this radio on the Internet thing, I’ve been looking back at what radio used to be. Before the suits, consultants, and bean counters got their hands on it, you could actually hear some very interesting things on FM.

Ah, but that was a long time ago. Now, we have satellite radio and the Internet. I’m a big satellite fan, but it’s still not nearly as free-form as I’d like. Still, there’s some great stuff on it. The same goes for the Internet. Will it be the future of radio? I’m not sure, but the idea sure is interesting.

The Friday Morning Listen: Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band - The Danny Show

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Longevity, it has become a rare thing in the music world. There just are not that many bands who hang in there for the haul.

Such is not the case with the E Street Band. They’ve been around for so long that I sometimes tend to forget that they’re not permanent. Nothing is permanent, really.

It was announced this past week that Danny Federici will be taking a leave of absence from the band to seek treatment for melanoma. His last show on this leg of the Magic tour was also the last Boston date…a date that may become known as The Danny Show.

Music Review: The Kilborn Alley Blues Band - Tear Chicago Down

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

This is the kind of blues music that makes you want to knock back a cold one, plug in your guitar, and make a big noise.

Or…you can let these guys do it for you.

Tear Chicago Down is proof that there’s still plenty of tasty & authentic Chicago blues being made.

Music Review: Serj Tankian - Elect The Dead

Friday, November 16th, 2007

System Of A Down is (or maybe was?) such a fun band. What with the blistering, careening guitars, pounding drums, and Tankian’s almost out of control voice, their records force me to crank the volume.

The band is apparently on “extended hiatus.” In the meantime, Tankian still has a lot to say, lyrically and musically.

The Friday Morning Listen: Terry Bozzio - Solo Drum Music

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Some musicians are merely “good.” By that I mean that they have a lot of skill. Watching them play, there’s no doubt in your mind that they can play whatever comes into their mind.

The problem is that sometimes, what comes to mind isn’t all that interesting.

This is not an issue with Terry Bozzio, whose imagination seems endless.

Music Review: Asaf Sirkis - The Song Within

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

On Sundays back when I was a little kid, I used to occasionally walk back down the street around mid-day to attend the Polish mass at our local church. The only reason for this was the pipe organ. I used to sit way in the back because the organ was the loudest back there.

This, of course, has almost nothing to do with jazz drummer Asaf Sirkis, except that he uses church organ on The Song Within. It’s really cool stuff. Check it out.

Music Review: Bennie Maupin - The Jewel in the Lotus

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Many years after its original release in the 1970’s, ECM has finally unearthed this long-lost record.

If you’re a fan of albums like Miles’ In A Silent Way and On The Corner, or maybe Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi, then The Jewel in the Lotus might be for you.

The Friday Morning Listen: Pat Metheny - New Chautauqua

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

There is nothing better than taking a day off just to sit back, read, and listen to some music…especially when you follow it by lunch in a nice coffee shop, a place very conducive to hanging out with a pad & pencil.

That’s exactly what I did on Friday.

The Future of Music?

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Is the CD dead? Are we headed for a download-only future?

At Blogcritics, we had outselves a little debate.
