The Friday Morning Listen: The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Have you ever been to Los Angeles? Ever been to the club called Largo? To see the musical genius known as Jon Brion?

Well, I haven’t. Mostly because a) I don’t like to fly and b) I hate cities.

But then I keep reading these danged articles about the guy and it makes me crazy.

Music Review: The Marcin Wasilewski Trio - January

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I’ve always considered “The Trio” — Jarrett,Peacock,DeJohnette — to be the modern-day jazz trio. I still do.

However, there are some new kids on the block and they are spectacular.

The Friday Morning Listen: Rick Derringer - Derringer Live

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Yesterday morning I pulled a clean pair of pants out of the clothes basket (lazy…hadn’t put them away yet) and, much to my surprise, I found twelve bucks in the right pocket. You know what that means? Yes, I have to buy a CD! It’s like free money!

So before lunch I took a work break and drove across the street to Newbury Comics. I wanted to get the new live Rush CD. Got that, no problem. I poked around a little bit more and came across this gem. Man, Derringer Live has been out of print on CD for years. My vinyl copy is pretty much shot too, so into my hand it goes.

Wow, lots of memories in that record.

The Friday Morning Listen: John Mellencamp - Scarecrow

Friday, May 9th, 2008

My Broadway music-fearing self just about fell off the couch with the news that Stephen King and John Mellencamp were putting together a music. I guess there’s been some difficulty with the script because the opening has been delayed.

This all got me to thinking about how I came to be a big fan of both King and Mellencamp.

Glittern and Doom: Tom Waits to Tour!

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Sadly, he’s not coming to the northeast (unless you count Columbus, which I don’t).

I’m tellin’ you, the man is a gee-nee-ous. Just check out this Glitter and Doom press conference:

Gee-Nee-Ous!!

Music Review: Mysteries Of The Revolution

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Oh man, there’s nothing better than discovering a piece of music that just refuses to fit into a nice little box.

Mysteries Of The Revolution dabbles in fusion, art rock, and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Check it out.

Music Review: Various Artists - Body of War: Songs That Inspired an Iraq War Veteran

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Protest music has fallen out of fashion. Hell, maybe even the act of protesting has gone away as well.

What does seem to be in fashion is dumping on those who dare to speak their mind. I’m sorry, that’s just crazy talk.

This collection of music inspired one Iraq war vet’s recovery from his own trauma.

The Friday Morning Listen: The Cars

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Some people seem to object to the use of CD’s, records, books, etc. as fetish objects. Since things are going digital, we should detach ourselves from the physical.

Screw that.

It took a fine anecdote from David Sedaris to induce this particular memory.

Music Review: Dapp Theory - Layers of Chance

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Pianist Andy Milne surprised me with the absolute groove-a-liciousness of this new release…until I remembered that he had a history with the M-Base Collective.

I spent many hours listening to stuff by M-Base and Steve Coleman. Loads of fun to be had there.

I tell you, this record is too much fun.
