The Friday Morning Listen: Yo-Yo Ma - The Cello Suites Inspired by Bach

Friday, November 28th, 2008

I woke up this morning, did a bunch of stuff, did some other stuff….and only then realized that it was heading toward noon.

Oh yes, the Friday Morning Listen was much later than normal. Hey, it’s Thanksgiving and things are a little crazy around the Saleski household.

Last week was official “Funny Song Title” week. This week is official “Naughty Song Title” week….though I swear that the title had no influence on my pick of the Mark Masters Ensemble track. Seriously, there’s some real diversity here, from soothing vocals all the way to a modern big band track that starts off sounding like Kiss.

Yes, that’s what I said: Kiss.

Check ‘Em Out:

Jack Broad: Swamp Witch

Mark Masters Ensemble: Le Clit

Sweet Baby J’ai: Exactly Like You (Perpetrating)

Rita Edmond: Misty

Satoko Fujii Orchestra Nagoya: Gokaku

Natsuki Tamura & Satoko Fujii: Infrared

The Friday Morning Listen: Beth Rowley - Little Dreamer

The Ohio Players.

Roxy Music.

Norah Jones.

Carly Simon.

What do they have in common? I guarantee you that many people have purchased their records just because of the album cover art.

This appears to be official FunnySongTitle week. I didn’t pick the tunes because of the titles (though I admit that I really did hope that “Tufu Queen” was worth reviewing).

Music News: New Bruce Springsteen Album, “Working On A Dream,” To Be Released On January 27, 2009

Monday, November 17th, 2008

If you do your math right, that would be just five days before his Superbowl appearance. Ah, so the rumors about why Bruce would actually do the Superbowl turned out to be true. Sort of. The thing is, we don’t really know why he chose to do it. I don’t even care all that much. I’m just excited about the new record.

Apparently, Bruce was on a creative roll during the Magic tour, and kept right on writing songs.

In addition to the title track, the studio version of which was debuted during last night’s football telecast, there are a couple of bonus songs: “The Wrestler” (from the film) and “A Night With The Jersey Devil,” a hard-hitting bluesy tune that Bruce released for Halloween.

Woo!!

The Friday Morning Listen: Stump - A Fierce Pancake

This week, we revisit the future of music discovery, distribution, and other fun stuff.

Also, I’m still pissed off about Sirius.

Sort of.

Music News: Sirius and XM Merger Hits The Fan

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

I’m not sure what I thought would happen. Sure, with every corporate merger comes the usual cost-cutting. With these two organizations, there were bound to be some changes.

Yesterday, the new channel lineups were announced and my radios were automatically updated.

Well, the best thing on satellite, Disorder is gone. Sirius has shot themselves in the heart.

This week provides yet more proof that the people who complain about there being “nothing good out there anymore” are either lazy or too old. Even though I sometimes (privately) complain about the amount of review material that shows up, I’ve recently discovered that my situtaion isn’t even close to this guy’s.

Check ‘Em Out:

Tony Malaby: Anemone

Steven Bernstein’s Millennial Territory Orchestra: We Are MTO

Paul Bley: Walking Woman

Martin Urbach: I Broke The Jazz

The Friday Morning Listen: Bill Frisell - History, Mystery

Friday, November 7th, 2008

I’ve been spending the past few days in my future home: Portland, Maine. TheWifeâ„¢ is here to give a talk at a conference of teachers. I’m here to be supportive in any way that I can, followed by a serious dose of slacking off.

So yesterday I got up late, showered, and walked down to the waterfront for breakfast. After that, it was over to my favorite coffee shop where I broke out the writing pad (there are always bits of assignments to be worked on). I’m telling you, this kind of life would not be hard to get used to.

As I sat there, thinking about the election and the future, it seemed that I should maybe be jotting down a few ideas about all of it. Here’s how it turned out.
