Jazz.com Reviews: June 30, 2009

There’s a lot of diverse sounds between these three entries. First we have a very unusual jazz group based on two electric guitars. Then we switch back to the more organic sonics of a piano duo…with a twist. Lastly, Andrew Green brings back memories of one of Martin Scorsese’s best films.

Jerry Granelli V16 - Murder Ballad

Andy Milne & Benoit Delbecq - Divide Comedy

Gardening? Sort of.

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

I have always been perplexed by peoples’ professed love for gardening. On the other hand, people have looked at me sideways when I say that I like watching golf on TV.

What you see below is as close as the Saleskis ever get to gardening. Actually, we really did enjoy it. I think the galvanized pails look pretty cool, certainly an improvement over the old plastic planters that we’ve had around here forever. I sort of felt bad having to punch holes in them to attach the hooks, but there was no way those handles were going to hold up to the weight of the contents.

Ok, time for some golf!…

Ole Number 66In the middle of doing a little garage archeology yesterday, I came across a box of bottles wrapped in plain newsprint. Now, this bottle isn’t as mysterious as it might look, since I do know who labeled it.

The question remains: What was in homebrew batch #66?

The Friday Morning Listen: Hole - Celebrity Skin

Wow, what a day. Farrah Fawcett, that cultural icon and sex symbol of the 1970’s, had finally passed away after her long bout with cancer. It made me sad.

Later in the day, the news breaks that Michael Jackson had been rushed to the hospital. I feared for the worst and I was right.

Damn, what a day.

I’m always sort of amazed when I listen to a guy singing jazz and I actually like it. It’s just one of those things. The male voice singing jazz doesn’t usually resonate with me. What’s more, add in a little Broadway-style influence and you would think there would be nothing there for me.

Sometimes, I’m just plain wrong. I really enjoyed listening to Ron Mitchell and his take on the classic “Smile”.

The Friday Morning Listen: Regina Spektor - Far

Friday, June 19th, 2009

After a long day of work yesterday, I came home to find a nice, fresh copy of the new Regina Spektor album. Nice way to end the evening if you ask me.

Oh wait, don’t forget about the bloody jockstrap.

Again, just a single review. This is mostly because I got a late start and had a fantastic wild goose chase attempting to get the musician lineup information for a particular CD. I failed. Actually, is there blame to be assessed? Probably. If this kind of info isn’t in the liner notes, it really should be on the Internet.

But that didn’t let me write about Sharel Cassity, a fantastic alto player.

A good mix here, with some guitar duets, extremely melodic bass, and one of the most beautiful songs I’ve heard in quite a while (if you don’t count The Low Anthem show I attended the week before last).

Iris Ornig - It’s Time To Say Goodbye

Larry Slezak - No Worries

Mike Arroyo - Recuerdos de Humacao

Brian Woodruff - Chorale

I know, this should read “Jazz.com Review,” since there’s only one. In my defense, I would like to point out that the piece of music is over twenty minutes long…and like, sorta complicated and whatnot, full of music curlicues and badinkles.
