Favorite Jazz & Blues Releases for 2009

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

After constructing my list, I realized that there’s a lot of vocals on it. Very unusual for me, but this has been an unusual year so maybe it makes sense.

Pop & Rock Favorites for 2009

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Musically speaking, it has been a very good year. I know this because: 1. the piles of CDs are growing around the house like muchrooms and 2. I had to do quite a bit of thinking to pare down this list to a manageable lenght.

These are not “the best” releases of 2009. I don’t like to use that term because it’s so laden with argument juice. In fact, the list isn’t even ordered with the exception of my favorite coming at the end. Anybody who has been paying attention will not be surprised at my choice. I tell you, that Low Anthem record is so good it may have to sit at the top next year too!

A jazz favorites list will be coming shortly.

Yeah, but I still love this record.

Music Review: Asylum Street Spankers - God’s Favorite Band

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Somehow, the Asylum Street Spankers have flown beneath my radar. Either that or I haven’t been paying attention.

In any case, the signals have bounced back all the way from Austin, Texas and I have added to my list of extremely fun and intriguing bands.

By the way, did you know that God drives a Volkswagen Thing?

The Friday Morning Listen: Squeeze - East Side Story

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The story of Tiger Woods and his really, really, really stupid actions has just sickened me.

That is all.

Music Review: Tom Gullion - Carswell

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Despite the fact that jazz has always made up a relatively small part of the entire music sales pool, there is still a surprisingly large amount of new releases out there. This is especially true in the indie jazz world.

Tom Gullion brings something new to the table: a fond look back at influences that goes way beyond mere nostalgia. Check it out.
